Welcome to my new series, Why I Like It Like That, where I talk about why I like a photo or what made me press the shutter. How often I’ll continue this series? No idea. My ADHD brain will decide that—so honestly, just forget everything you’ve read so far. Let me just show you a photo I kinda like.
I took this shot back in 2016 in Bavaria, still using my Canon EOS 700D. I have no idea why I hit the shutter at that moment. But I’ve always just captured compositions without thinking much about them. I guess I just see these things subconsciously (bragging mode off). And later, I realize, “Oh, this actually works pretty well.”
Now, eight years later, I do look for compositions more deliberately, but a lot of the time, it still just happens.
What I love about this shot is how it’s divided into three sections: the dirt path in the top third, the chaotic textures and colors in the middle, and the stream winding through the lower part.
The top feels calm, with little pops of red flowers, and that straight dirt path kind of holds back all the chaos happening below.
Then there’s the middle section—textures everywhere, earthy tones, and that stream curving through in contrast to the straight road above. It almost acts like a barrier, keeping the visual noise from spilling too much into the lower third. And those two “dividing lines” also add a nice color contrast to the otherwise green-heavy scene.
And if you don’t just take a quick glance at this photo, which is divided into three sections by the rule of thirds, you’ll notice three cows in the middle part.
What do you think? Makes sense, or just meh? How does the photo feel to you? And when did you first start noticing composition?
Thanks for reading
Have a good one

I love the picture. However, to me it's divided in five parts:
- top green part: mainly grass, calm
- road: to take us from A to B
- mid green part: a lot of rocks on green and some life (aka cows)
- river: endless movement, flowing
- bottom green part: again, less rocks then the middle section but more then the top section
It works really well in my opinion. The scale is interesting too. I would not have seen the cows unless you mentioned them, though I am viewing on the app right now. I figured the scale was smaller, not as big.
